1968-1972

These selected University of Kentucky Archives documents from 1968-1972 relate to the Black Student Union, including Bill Turner's speech at the UK Student Government-organized FOCUS '68 Symposium on April 5, 1968, one day after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., and in place of invited speaker Mohammad Ali, who cancelled in wake of the assassination.  There is also a course description for the first African American-related course at UK from 1969-1970, HIS260: The Negro in American History.

Black Student Union workshop film (digitized), undated, but probably around 1970.  This is an amateur film of three events: A performance by a group of musicians on a stage; a group of people sitting in a cafeteria; and a meeting and discussion in a classroom. The musical performance includes at least two guitarists and three percussionists. The meeting includes shots of individuals speaking at a podium and other people sitting in chairs listening to the speakers or speaking themselves. The same group of people are then filmed sitting in a wide circle, with individual people speaking and others listening. Several of the people in the meeting and discussion are smoking cigarettes. Much of the film is grainy, out of focus, or underexposed.
