By the time of the 1832 presidential election, Henry Clay was a well-known name in the political realm. He had served as a Representative and Speaker of the House, and had been defeated in the 1824 presidential election, afterward serving as Secretary of State.

The 1832 election was also an unsuccessful one for Henry Clay. He was defeated by Andrew Jackson.
