Collaboration with Organizations
Printers and poets collaborate with organizations to provide unique printed objects to commemorate occasions or events. Printing for organizations offers the opportunity to publish works written specifically for the occasion and to publish unpublished poems.
"William Clark Muses on His Return to Kentucky with the Corps of Discovery on November 5, 1806," Richard Taylor, Larkspur Press
The Kentucky Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commission with James Holmberg of the Filson Historical Society invited Richard Taylor to compose a poem to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Lewis’ and Clark’s return to Kentucky. Gray Zeitz of Larkspur press printed the broadside. Taylor finds the collaboration with Zeitz rewarding, since the printer always consults with the poet and obtains his approval on the design. Larkspur Press prints for several organizations, including a broadside each year for the Kentucky Arts Council commemorating the Kentucky poet laureate.

The King Library Press collaborated with the W.B. Yeats International Summer School in Sligo, Ireland, to create yearly keepsake broadsides. Jonathan Allison, University of Kentucky professor of English, has served as director of the school, which created the opportunity for a collaboration with the King Library Press. The keepsake of the 45th year was an unpublished poem by Seamus Heaney, "The Blackbird of Glanmore." The broadside has a simple layout with the title and part of the colophon printed in red ink creating interest and balance. It also features a wood engraving by Jeffrey Morgan of the logo for the Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry at Queen’s University in Belfast, Ireland.
"The Mountain is Holding Out," Paul Muldoon, King Library Press
The keepsake for the 46th year of the W. B. Yeats International Summer School in Sligo, Ireland, lead to another opportunity to print an unpublished poem. "The Mountain is Holding Out" by Paul Muldoon has a similar layout to "Blackbird," with the title and school logo printed in red ink providing the same interest and balance as the other Sligo broadside.
Collaborating with organizations allows for a series of objects with visual consistency that contributes to the significance of an event or occasion.
